Glen Townsend, a Lifestart Dad, had the initiative to organise four BBQs at Mitre 10, Matraville in an attempt to raise some much needed funds for Lifestart Eastern Sydney’s Cubes for Kids Project.

Glen and his father have arrived bright and early on both weekends to date, with the Lifestart promotional materials and a small float to set up for a morning of cooking bacon, eggs and sausages, which were generously provided by the store. Glen also brought his own esky along full of soft drinks, which proved to be a real hit with the customers, especially at the first barbeque as it was a really hot day!

By the time the hotplate was loaded, two other families from the branch arrived to lend a hand with the cooking and provide a bit of moral support. A few of the stores regular customers were happy to stay around for a chat with the Lifestart families for most of the morning and actually purchased seconds. They thought the cooks were better than most who have ran the barbeques before. One can not be blamed for thinking they say that to everyone, although one couple did come back to buy their dog a sausage. What a treat!

Many of the customers took the time to find out about Lifestart and were only too happy to donate their change. Very few people were able to resist the persuasive sales techniques that were being used by the dads.

The Townsend family’s efforts have raised $850 so far towards the Cubes for Kids Project. It is a great example of how people can contribute to the project through working with a great sponsor like Mitre 10.

The dates for the remaining barbeques are:
Saturday 24th July and Sunday 22nd August 2010 9am-12pm.

Lifestart’s Cubes for Kids Project was launched on 9 July at the Sydney Football Stadium during the Rugby League match between the Sydney Roosters and the South Sydney Rabbitohs. Mr Simon Camilleri, General Manager of Baiada Steggles, a long time supporter of Lifestart launched our new interactive website.

Baiada Steggles involvement with Lifestart

Baiada Steggles has been a sponsor of Lifestart for some years in a variety of formats, including assisting with the Kayak for Kids events with provision of food, volunteers and other sponsorship.

Since 2002, Baiada has run a national Charity Nest which supports seven children’s charities, including Lifestart. The Roosters are supporting this Charity Nest through their contract with Steggles Baiada.

Steggles Charity Nest Stegglers for Children’s Charities

Lifestart families have been enthusiastically watching Roosters games.

Both the Roosters and the Rabbitohs clubs cover the reach of the Eastern Sydney Branch of Lifestart and so there is a good fit with the Cubes for Kids project for Lifestart with Baiada Steggles and the NRL teams.

Lifestart Eastern Sydney covers the regions represented by both teams so it was a fitting venue to launch the project and to promote it as a community venture.

Companies, individuals and local businesses also are supporting the project. One major sponsor is Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

The cubes concept has been received enthusiastically by the community. People have been securing cubes to name a cube in honour of a family member as an enduring record of their community support for a worthwhile cause.
